Does acupuncture hurt?

Does acupuncture hurt?

Why fear of needles comes from blood tests – and why it doesn't apply to acupuncture.

Transcript

Fear of needles usually comes from blood tests. A blood-test needle is fairly aggressive – it has to draw blood, and it hurts. In Chinese acupuncture the needles are very, very fine, and in the Japanese method we use even finer needles placed very superficially. It should feel like anything from nothing at all to a tiny pinch – no more. Acupuncture shouldn't hurt, and even people who are afraid of needles go through treatment and are helped significantly – including with the fear itself.

Back pain – without surgery

Back pain – without surgery

Why an MRI doesn't tell the whole story, and how acupuncture treats back pain.

Transcript

With back pain we first want a diagnosis – we see a doctor and usually get a CT or MRI. But our bodies age; from around 30–40 our tissues become less strong. Take ten 50-year-olds and scan them – many will show disc bulges or herniations, and that doesn't necessarily mean they are in pain. So it's important to say: back pain can be resolved naturally, without side effects and without surgery. Back surgery, in my view, should be the last resort. Give Chinese medicine a try – I treat a lot of back pain, and acupuncture is very effective for it.

Period pain shouldn't hurt

Period pain shouldn't hurt

Yotam's statement: there is a natural treatment for period pain – it isn't "normal".

Transcript

I'm making a statement: period pain doesn't have to hurt. Most women are told by their doctor that it's normal, that everyone hurts – take painkillers, sometimes the pill. I say there's a natural treatment, without side effects, that can help women who take painkillers every month, who sometimes take sick days from work and can't function at home. There is an answer – Chinese medicine and acupuncture.

Diagnosis through the abdomen

Diagnosis through the abdomen

The Japanese diagnostic method Yotam uses – and what it reveals.

Transcript

The main diagnostic method I use comes from Japanese medicine – through the abdomen. Palpating the abdomen gives me an indication of the state of the organs and lets me build a treatment strategy. Each tender reflex – you can feel your own abdomen for harder and softer areas – tells me which channel to work on and where to improve circulation. When that reflex releases during the session, I know circulation is working better and I expect the patient to feel better with the complaint they came with.

What Chinese medicine sets out to solve

What Chinese medicine sets out to solve

Meridians, internal organs – and the taxi driver with shoulder pain.

Transcript

Meridians divide the body into channels; each is linked to an internal organ and gives us a way to look at that organ from the outside. By palpating a channel I can understand the organ's state, choose acupuncture points and improve circulation – and with it, function. The usual answer is a pill every time your head hurts. I say: let's understand why your head, stomach or back hurts. Example: a taxi driver who leaned on the armrest all day and had shoulder pain. I told him to remove the armrest – the day he stopped leaning on it, the pain went away. It's about understanding where your problem really sits.

Treatment is a process

Treatment is a process

Why a minimum of five sessions – and how the next steps are decided.

Transcript

Chinese medicine is a process, like life – not a one-off. We start with a minimum of five sessions, which give me time to diagnose, ask the right questions and understand where the problem sits in your habits and routine, so it can be solved at the root. After five sessions we review: for pain – has range of motion improved; for sleep – how much better are you sleeping. Then we decide: continue weekly, meet every two weeks or monthly – or even finish treatment.

(Hebrew transcript)

Arthritis – and hope

Arthritis – and hope

A patient with severe arthritis – and what changed after one session.

Transcript

In Chinese medicine – it sounds odd – the complaint matters less than the state of the body. I focus treatment where I see circulation is impaired. This patient was diagnosed with severe arthritis, on biological treatment, and her doctors weren't optimistic. After one acupuncture session at the right points, she told me a week later – to my own surprise – that she was walking better, sleeping better and in much less pain. Above all it gives patients hope that complex chronic and autoimmune conditions can be treated too.

Leg swelling

Leg swelling

How Chinese medicine explains swelling – and what a few nutrition tips did.

Transcript

Leg swelling is very common. Chinese medicine links it to "dampness" stuck in the body – similar to the phlegm we know in the lungs, throat and nose, but showing up in the digestive system, the system that produces our energy. When energy production is less efficient, fluids find it easy to sink and hard to rise. I gave a patient a few nutrition tips – less white flour, white sugar and dairy – and she took them seriously. Within three to four weeks the swelling in her legs dropped significantly.

Skin, lungs and grief

Skin, lungs and grief

When itchy skin leads to a conversation about grief – body and emotion in Chinese medicine.

Transcript

This week a patient came with itchy skin across his body. He'd seen several dermatologists, tried creams and pills – nothing helped. On examination I found little except the lung channel, which in Chinese medicine relates both to the skin and to the emotion of grief. I asked whether he'd been through a significant loss – and he burst into tears. His father had died two years earlier and since then he felt he couldn't function. I explained the link between skin, grief and the lungs and recommended, beyond treatment, finding a way to let go and move forward.

My mission

My mission

Why Yotam does what he does.

Transcript

Patients come to me in pain, often frustrated or even hopeless. They've been diagnosed with a chronic or autoimmune condition and offered pills for life – that isn't quality of life. Being able to offer a natural medicine that treats problems at the root, even complex ones, is a huge mission for me. People go through a process – sometimes short, sometimes longer – and get back to their lives and their dreams, without limits. Every morning, knowing I can help people this way fills me up again.

(Hebrew transcript)
